MAGNA

Today we enjoyed a fantastic trip to MAGNA science adventure centre. The trip was part of both our Rocks and Soils topic and our Natural Disasters topic.

First, we had a workshop all about rocks and volcanoes. To start with we were given an empty film canister and had to fill it with bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. This caused a chemical reaction that made the mixture spill out onto the table. We then had to place play dough around the canister where our mixture had spread to. We then repeated this two more times using different coloured playdough to form a volcano! Then we became geologists and excavated ‘rock’ from our volcanoes using a clear straw. In the straw we could see the different layers that helped to form our volcano!

After lunch, we had an opportunity to explore MAGNA. MAGNA is made up of four pavilions which include lots of exciting and interactive exhibits.

We even had chance to watch ‘The Big Melt’ a show that taught us all about MAGNA’s past as a steelworks.
