Fossils!

As part of our rocks and soils topic we have been looking at how fossils are formed. Today, we learnt that fossils are formed over millions of years. Animals, plants and even footprints can be fossilised.

After learning how fossils are formed, we made our own fossils. First, we made an impression with a creature in some clay. Then, we placed the clay into the bottom of a plastic cup. Then an adult poured plaster over our moulds and we left them to set. Finally, we peeled away the clay to reveal our amazing fossils.

Rocks!

This half term, we have been learning all about rocks and soils in our science lessons. On Tuesday, we were learning about how rocks change over time by investigating the causes of erosion.

In our investigation, we had to first put our rock into a container, fill it with water and then seal the container tightly. Then, we had to shake our container non-stop for 100 seconds. Finally, we poured the contents of our container into a funnel lined with filter paper. When we examined our filter paper, we discovered that the rock had started to erode away. We repeated our investigation with igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks.
